Reese is a happy, comical dog, with a great enthusiasm for life. He is very affectionate and loves to engage with people. He will rough house and play vigorous tug o war if allowed. Yet, he will also happily curl up in a chair with you for a snuggle, or flop upside down on the floor for a belly rub. Reese is a busy dog--not racing around wild, but generally occupied chewing a bone, roaming around the yard sniffing if outside, or tossing a toy about. He does require a fair amount of exercise. Currently he takes a four mile jog first thing in the morning, followed by a short playtime in the yard. He is ready for another walk, or playtime, by late afternoon or evening. Reese will be two years old in January. He is somewhat puppyish in nature and his manners are still a bit rough, needing reminders about rules such as jumping on people in greeting, nibbly teeth when playing, and counter surfing.

Reese is getting along well with the other dogs in his foster home. He will occasionally gently snag a bone from someone else if he can get away with it. Reese will play with the other dogs for brief periods--engaging in a game of tug or chase or running with the others as they pursue a ball. But usually after a few minutes of this, he will wander off on his own to sniff or chew a bone. Reese LOVES to chew bones and will spend quite a bit of time thus engaged. Despite his love for chewing, he has not shown a tendency to chew inappropriate objects. He also enjoys toys and will parade around with a toy in his mouth whenever someone comes in the door.

Reese is from a merle to merle breeding. As a result of this, he has been deaf from birth. Deaf dogs enjoy all the usual canine activities and can be easily trained and communicated with, using signs. Reese carefully watches all that goes on around him and seldom misses much due to his deafness. He knows several hand signals--sit, down, stay, come, watch. He pays attention in quiet environments, but when out and about in public, is very easily distracted. Reese will pull hard on a regular collar, but has done well walking on a Gentle Leader harness. He is housebroken and crate trained. Reese enjoys riding in the car, but can be restless.

Reese does not live with cats. Upon meeting a cat at the vet's office. he approached the cat in a friendly manner and gave him a sniff. He attempted to chase the cat when the cat trotted away across the office.

Due to his exuberant nature, Reese will not be placed with children under 10. He is a wonderful dog who deserves a second chance for a loving, forever home. Reese is being fostered in central Connecticut.

Gizzy! Such a heartbreaking story, wants a home!!

Hi, I am GIZZY and I have suffered a real tragedy recently. I was adopted as a puppy and my mommy took such great care of me. She took me for walks, the dog park and rides in the car. She would watch tv with me on the couch with her arm around me. I had the best life. But unfortunately, my mom died and there was nowhere for me to go. I ended up at animal control but they found a chip in me that let them know to take me back to my original rescuer . The bad news is that although I am back with her, she has so many homeless doggies that there in nowhere for me to stay. So, she has me living in boarding. I am lonely in here and want to go out and play. I love other dogs and people. I am a real red headed ginger colored pit mix about 5 years old. I give great big sloppy kisses and am as good as gold,. I don't even wander out if the gate is open. I am completely up to date on my shots, neutered and heartworm negative, clean as a whistle, as my mom took great care of me.

I really need a new home, even though I want to go back to my old house, I know my mom isn't there anymore..

Gizzy is SUCH an awesome, sweet boy!! He just wants to lay in your lap or on his back to get rubbed! He is good with other dogs, kids, and EVEN cats!!! he is such a sweet heart that needs a home ASAP!!!

Hi, I'm Shamus. One cold, rainy night I was looking for my family in the road. There were so many cars driving by so fast, honking their horns and yelling at me. . All I wanted to do was find my family, but none of the cars stopped. Finally, after standing in the cold and rain for hours, someone called out to me. He sounded nice, was it dad?? So I ran over to him. It wasn't my dad, but the nice man told me to hop in his truck where it was dry and warm. Boy did it feel good to get out of the rain. He took me home and has been caring for me there for a while. He tells me he loves me, but can not keep me due to the bans on me breed. I don't really understand, but I hope I will find a forever home soon.

Shamus is such a big beautiful boy!!He is such a lover and is very well behaved, he is young (about 2ish years) and knows a couple of basic commands like "sit". He loves to give lots of kisses!! He has the most squishable, lovable, mushable, kissable face!! Shamus has truly stolen my heart, and I can not put into words how much I truly love this dog. He desperately needs a forever or foster home!!

Meet Toad.

He's a five-year-old golden tabby with a sweet disposition and a love for canned tuna (and fine Cognac and Cuban cigars). He's very social with people, loves getting attention and loves to play. He's rather docile, and will let you pick him up, squeeze him and tease him without much fuss. He loves being in the same room with you and just keeping you company, and at night, he'll snuggle up to you in bed. When you come home, he'll greet you at the door with mews and meows and demand you give him a rub down while he purrs loudly away.

He's lived with other cats before and he tends to be the submissive one, so he doesn't do well with more aggressive cats as they will bully him. He's very clean, and I keep his claws capped with Soft Paws, which has broken his scratching habits. His eating habits are fussy, and he will only touch dry food and the occasional canned tuna treat.

He's neutered and in good health, aside from a bit of pudge. I've had him since he was 1-year-old, and he's been an absolute treat. I have to give him up because I am moving across to the West Coast and my travel schedule will mean I won't be able to give him the attention he needs.

I live about 2 blocks up from the cozy beach area - right near the volunteer fire station. We have 3 cats that live outdoors and come indoors every night. On Wednesday (11/4) our cat Tweak did not come home. It has now been almost 3 full days missing and I am very worried. We walked the neighborhood and called for her and did not find her. She does respond to whistling and if you see her, you should be able to whistle and she will come right over to you.

She is very VERY friendly and when you pick her up she will likely cling to you like a baby. If you find her put her somewhere to hold her until we get there. I dont care if you have to stick her in a car, a cage, or in a box - just keep her there.

She is a brown and black tabby. Her coloring looks a lot like a racoon.. she is speckled black and brown on her back with black rings around her tail. She is a small cat but kind of pudgy, especially in the belly area. She was last seen wearing a pink collar with skull and cross bones, but she may be without it as it was a safetly break-away collar.

We will pay $100 cash to anyone who returns her to us or to the person who offers us a lead as to where she might be.. So if you think you saw her in your yard, give us a call.
Please check your garages, sheds, or anywhere she might have crawled into and gotten trapped. It was cold and rainy that night so she might have gotten stuck.. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help us bring our tweak home.. she is our baby.

Mama cat and cute kitten on the street (Chapel St & Park St)

My bf and I were taking a walk today on Chapel St and saw a cute kitten and it's mommy sleeping in the sun in front of the building that's next to Dunkin Donuts and the comics shop. I think that building has a notary public sign on it? The mama and the baby looked almost identical, both with white and tabbie/calico patches, very cute. When approached they run behind a locked metal gate, the kitten then seems to want to approach you but is a bit too shy. The mommy just sits there behind the gate between two buildings. I didn't have any food but I think they would perhaps approach someone who offers them food. They were still there half an hour ago when we walked back on Chapel St, still sleeping on the ground in the sun. They look like strays, so it makes me sad to see such cute cats outside. Today is a warm day but it gets cold at night, poor kitties!

The Meriden Humane Society is a �NO KILL� shelter that runs solely on donations and is currently housing about 120 cats that have either been surrendered to the shelter or dumped in their parking lot after hours. We are currently beyond capacity and are soliciting donations from the public.

The Meriden Humane Society is in DESPERATE need of the following:

� Yesterday�s News Cat Litter (Brand Specific please)
� Purina Cat Chow (Blue Bag)
� Purina Kitten Chow (Yellow Bag)
� Canned Cat Food (Any Brand � NO SHELLFISH due to allergies)

Needs a lot of excersize to stay fit. Only eats dog food wet or dry. Likes human food every once and a while as a treat but not on a regular basis. If allowed loves to lay on couches and sleep on beds with you. Loves peanut butter. Teeth must be cleaned every 2-3 weeks, nails must be cut every 2-3 months if not walked on a daily basis. I read his post that he made the other day. He noted that he records all conversations. Can someone explain why on earth a shelter would need to record phone conversations if not for the fact of complaints and issues regarding the phones? Please tell me one other shelter/facility besides a police station that records conversations? Name one. I can't honestly think of any. So there must be a reason why he needed to put in a recording device. I personally think that money should have been spent on the animals no? Thats my opinion. But if anyone can answer that. It's obvious there are issues there with people complaining about the secretary, her getting an attitude with people who calls or not relating messages. This is so ridiculous that the Town has to put up with it. He needed to go as far as to record her. Why not simply replace her,suspend her, terminate her job:
Srg. Angelo if you are reading this I urge you to change your tactics and attitude towards the Animals and the Public. Someone who respects animals and the town of west haven perhaps should be in your position, no offence.

When the volunteer called SFTH to tell us about Princess & Kiki she couldn't stop crying. She told us how their family badly neglected them, and when she went to see for herself, she found what looked like two sets of eyes hidden through clumps and clumps of dirty matted hair. Table scraps lingered in their bowls behind the kitchen gate they called home. She reached out to them. She described the way they looked, like they had never been combed in their lives, dreadlocks so knotted up it pulled on their skin to the point of pain. She cried as she described how filthy and unkept they were. We assured her we would take them next morning and they were immediately brought to our vet. Within a day it was determined this 9-year-old pair were unneutered and with severe dry eyes, but otherwise healthy for their age. These poor little Angels had to endure living in the kitchen for years. No walks, no brushing, no company, no vet care. As they got to know vet staff and walkers, they started to enjoy being doted upon, being walked, pet and given treats. Amazing what a little love can do, the transformation began almost immediately.

Princess & Kiki are now spayed and neutered, UTD with all vaccines and in a temporary foster home. Although they love children we think they would do best with older kids. We want this for them simply because we want them to be spoiled! After all they�ve been through they need to feel loved and cared for above everything. The foster home reports that they have made tremendous strides and transformed into the most comical dogs often playing and rolling on top of one another in the home. Given 3 -4 walks a day and there have been no accidents in the home. A backyard would be just as nice. They LOVE belly rubs, being in your lap and Kiki loves to chew on rawhide bones�.he also does this cute little thing where he rubs on his back until he finds the perfect spot to relax in, paws in the air�.who knew? And Princess, well, she�s just a doll.

We are looking for someone very special, someone with a huge heart, kindness, patience and love. Someone who can give Princess & Kiki the love and care they deserve. They are really nice, sweet dogs who love to play but also love to sit on the couch and relax just as well. Sadly, most of the animal shelters in our state are a transitional housing facility for homeless pets, not a place to find a new home. The lucky ones get adopted but that is the exception, not the rule. The non-caring attitude of the employees reflects the fact that they are there for a job, usually a state or city employment situation, and are sitting there biding their time in order to earn a pension and/or benefits. They are not there because they love animals and are interested in helping to stop the cycle of abuse, neglect and breeding, or because they want to find animals good homes. There are many animals still being adopted out who are not spayed or neutered and are therefore likely to be used as fighting dogs and/or breeders.

If more people stepped up to the plate and volunteered their time and resources we could not only make a difference in the lives of the animals, stop the endless reproduction of animals (and for the politians among us - save money on shelter staff, food for the animals, medical care for the animals, and save taxes on top of it!), stop the pain and suffering of animals adopted out carelessly, and relieve some of the people so involved in rescue, who give up so much to help those who cannot speak for themselves. Animals are living, feeling things - imagine how you would feel if you were just given to any home, regardless of how they would care for you. Imagine how you would feel if your life depended on whether someone wanted to take the time to transport you to a rescue or whether someone could be bothered to get off their chair to introduce you to a potential adopter. Imagine how you would feel if you lost everything you have ever known only to be thrown in a cold, concrete cubicle just to sit there and be looked at - never socialized or touched by a gentle hand. Imagine how scary it would be to just be handed to someone and have to go to a new place and adjust to a new place and strangers all around you.

Please take the time to volunteer and speak up for the animals at your local shelters. One person can do so much and you will receive so much more in return! The feeling you get when you take a scared, sickly animal out of a shelter and bring it back to health (mentally and physically) and then place it in a loving, forever home is more love and gratitude than you will ever know.

I called there last week. Someone i know called me and said their neighbor moved and left a cat locked in the house. Even the post Man said they had moved because he doesn't deliver mail there anymore but he said he knows where they moved to So I called the West haven Animal Control to try to help the cat out and perhaps have those people get in trouble for abandoning their cat. The woman who is the secretary there answered and was very obnoxious. She said " oh no no we don't get involved like that. Thats to much paper work and you need to call the police about that stuff. " I asked her what about the cat inside. She said well there are no officers here now so i can try to have one call you. .......I waited all day and night. Nobody called me back. Me and the woman i knew thats the neighbor broke the back window and thankfully got the cat out.
The cat is a beautiful orange boy who we will keep with us =). We have 2 adopted dogs and the cat is doing great. I'm writing this to express how sad i am at the way the system works regarding that secretary. She is the basis to all calls, I wonder what happens to potential adopters? If anyone works there or knows someone that works there, please ask them to address this issue. The women didnt even suggest anything on what to do about the cat inside. Not even an ounce of care. I can't understand how someone can work in an Animal facility and seem to have no regards for the public or animal safty. I swear i feel so ashamed to live in West Haven knowing a person like that works at our towns shelter. A place where i thought has so much care and concern for animals.

p.s. its been about 5 days and no i still never recieved a call back. I am in no way blaming the officers there because perhaps they never got the message.

We are in desperate need of foster homes and help with transporting dogs. More info on Fostering: If you adopt one dog, you are giving that one dog a permanent home. But if you can foster a dog, preparing it for life in a home, you are allowing that many more dogs to be placed in permanent homes. While many people can't let go, others are reluctant to foster in the first place, thinking that it is somehow unfair to take in a dog, establish a bond, and then allow the animal to be adopted out into another home. Isn't that a second abandonment? We will provide supplies, food, instructions and vet care. Foster parents willing to provide supplies and food themselves, will be helping the program out immensely. Not only does a foster program maximize the number of animals rescued, it allows us to care for animals that would be difficult to care for in a shelter environment - orphaned or pregnant dogs, those recovering from major surgery, dogs needing one-on-one behavior rehabilitation and those that need a break from the shelter environment, foster care provides a comfortable home setting that will keep them happy and healthy. Taking a stray or frightened animal and showing them that people can be kind, that food is available and that there is a warm place to sleep, creates a marvelous bridge to a new home. Those of us who provide foster space know that there is never a shortage of animals that need this preparation time before finding their own people. Shamus is desperately seeking a home. He was found wondering the streets in Georgia in the pouring rain. This sweet guy is a pitbull, about 55 pounds and under 2 years old. He is looking for a home through a reputable rescue organization, but because of an overwhemling amount of homeless dogs, he was recently moved to a boarding kennel- a safe but no frills place where Shamus will get adequate but bare bones care until he finds a better place. Up for adoption is a litter of four eleven month old black and white kittens (two males: Mr. Beans and Pauly Walnuts and two females: Libby and Fetalia) who were born with a neurological disorder called cerebellar hypoplasia. Although their coordination is somewhat compromised (they appear as though they�ve had too much to drink), they are in no pain, use the litterbox faithfully and have a normal lifespan. Hi all I have a 9 year old male orange tabby cat. His name is Milo and he needs a good home. We rescued him from a friend who had to move out of her apartment she was going to leave an indoor cat outside to fend for himself. My mom took him in. He is an awesome cat who loves attention. But he is miserable here. We have 2 dogs and 3 other cats and we just can't spend all the time he would love for us to spend on him. He will climb into your lap and just love to be loved. He loves the quiet which he never gets here because I live with my mother and my 3 kids. It is always loud and he gets chased by the dogs and I would love to see him go to someone who will love him forever. My mom has an appointment to take him to the ASPCA in Westport On Thursday. I don't want to see him go into a cage and wait months and months to get adopted. I really wish he didn't have to go but with 3 kids 2 dogs and 3 other cats and Mom I can't keep him. If you are interested in more information about him I can send you pictures and tell you more. If you are going to say how awful I am for getting rid of a cat it isn't my choice it is my mothers house. Thank you so much in advance,

I have a beautiful 10 month old black lab mix, i love him more than anything but he needs more attention than i have time to give. He is very loving but needs some training, he knows how to sit, give paw, catch, and take easy. He is energetic but if able to run around and get it all out, he is exhausted. His name is Diesel and he needs a great home with a place for him to run around and lots of love and attention, and someone who is willing to train him. He is up to date on all of his shots and is neutered, i have all of his adoption paperwork along with his vet paperwork. He has a microchip in him. Diesel gets along great with other dogs and loves children but he also likes to jump and weighs 60 lbs. I dont not want to let him go but it will be too hard for both of us if i do keep him, so please only great home replies.

They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones, while I run the streets just looking for bones! I'm not really bad, God, please help if you can, or I have become just a "Victim of Man!" I'm wormy dear God and I'm ridden with fleas, and all that I want is an Owner to please! If you find one for me God, I'll try to be good, and I won't chew their shoes, and I'll do as I should. I'll love them, protect them and try to obey.... when they tell me to sit, to lie down or to stay! I don't think I'll make it too long on my own, cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone. Each night as I sleep I cry, cause I'm so afraid God, that I'm going to die. And I've got so much love and devotion to give, that I should be given a new chance to Live! So dear God, please answer my prayer, and send me someone who will REALLY care. HEY!! .I JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN!!!...but the SHELTER WANTS TO PUT ME DOWN BECAUSE THEY JUST HAVE NO SPACE LEFT!!!... He's a BIGHEADED boy but that makes him all the more GOOFY AND FUN-LOVING!!He's about 70 lbs of pure BOMBASTIC JOY!! and you give him a couple of toys and he's good to go!!... JAMIE seems to be fine with other dogs but because he's so big and loves toys... he's probably best with older kids 12 yrs + and no cats!... HE will make a wonderful loyal fun loving companion!!.. Two lovely rabbits free to a good home. The rabbits are in excellent health. One is male with short ears that stick up and brown fur and a white tail. His name is Peter. The female, named Anabelle, is a black rabbit with lop ears. Both have been fixed.

I am moving to New York City and am not able to keep the rabbits. I'd love to see them in a home where they have some room to run around and people who will enjoy them.

Thank you very much for the advice. Should it ever happen again I will do just that. I don't expect it to but you never know. In the meantime she now has bedding from the stuff I sifted out plus a very nice guy is donating two big ol bags of bedding that should hold us for a while. It's very rare that things become so tight that a three dollar bag of bedding is impossible to get but this was one time where it was and I truly thank everyone for their help and input.
