The PREST Movement- People for Race and Ethnicity Studies Today

The PREST Movement (People for Race and Ethnicity Studies Today) is a youth-led campaign that has three goals: (1) to make Race and Ethnicity Studies a required course in all Connecticut middle and high schools, (2) to increase the number of teachers of color, and (3) to make anti-racism trainings a requirement for CT teachers and administrators.
Being a Youth Organizer with The PREST Movement means prioritizing youth power and voice as a means to organize and win. It means connecting young people to ideas, to justice work, to leadership, to each other, etc. A PREST Youth Organizer is aware of power dynamics that exist between identities and experiences, and they are willing to show up as their full self in a highly impactful leadership role.

Youth Organizer will work with the Lead Organizer to ...
Facilitate regular PREST Youth Team (PYT) meetings every Thursday from 4-5:30p.m.
Design workshops and trainings for young people
Conduct outreach and regular 1-on-1s with young people
Promote PYT throughout New Haven/CT coalitions + networks, and beyond
Participate in occasional parent/guardian outreach
Provide overall support for PYT including field trips, special events, and parent workshops
Other duties as assigned by Lead Organizer

Demonstrated experience with different types of organizing - working with young people is a plus
A committed understanding of how oppression/race/identity works
A solid vision/passion for real and sustainable change
Strong communication skills
Capacity to both lead and be led and capacity to be flexible
Willingness to learn and share knowledge/experiences/skills
Trust the process! - willingness to experiment with best practices as well as make and learn from mistakes
Strong ties to New Haven community and experience with education justice work is a plus
Practiced facilitation skills/ or at least an interest in facilitation and training work
Knowledge of Google Drive apps a must // knowledge of Prezi, Canva, Wix, MailChimp is a plus
Strong preference for someone comfortable with social media i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
